Our Heritage

Mizell Funeral Home was founded in 1905 by Ted Hollow and was originally located on Main Street, Cuba. Known then as Ted Hollow Furniture, Livery and Undertaking Business.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shanklin moved to Cuba in 1944 and purchased the Hollow business, moved the business to 904 W. Washington St. and named it Shanklin Funeral Homes. They had three locations; Cuba, Bourbon and Leasburg.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shanklin decided to retire and sold the business to the Britton Family in 1967 and it became known as the Shanklin-Britton Funeral Home. With the addition of a new chapel in 1973 the funeral home was named Britton Brothers funeral Home. Following this acquisition, the Britton Brothers acquired Sparks Funeral Home in Potosi and the Halbert-Stuart Funeral Home in Steelville.

Three brothers made up the funeral business; John and wife Ava, Alfred and wife Barbara and Donald and wife Madeline. A second generation, sons Kevin and Ron also joined the business. The motto of the Britton Brothers was "Our Family Serving Your Family." Compassion and caring for people was more than a practice for the Britton Brothers Funeral Homes - it was a Family tradition.

The Britton Funeral Home of Cuba has had three major additions over the years and encompasses over 14,000 square feet.

On July 21, 2005 Don and Madeline Britton decided to retire and the Cuba location was sold to C. Don and Lesa M. Mizell. After acquiring the funeral home major renovations have been made to the facility and every room has changed to some degree. In March of 2011 after serving the community for nearly 6 years the funeral home name was changed to Mizell Funeral Home.

The new motto at Mizell Funeral Home is "Honored To Serve Since 1905"
